Dr. Martin Muchangi

Dr. Martin Muchangi

Principal Investigator

Dr. Martin Muchangi is a distinguished public health specialist, climate and health expert with over 17 years of experience designing, implementing, and evaluating public health programmes across Africa. He serves as Director for Population Health and Environment at Amref Health Africa, leading strategic initiatives on climate change and health, environmental health, WASH, NTDs and Public Health Security. He is the Principal Investigator of the IDRC-funded ESA Hub Climate Change and Health Project and Director of the Centre for Research and Policy in Climate Change and Health at Amref International University. He is also a Coordinating Lead Author for Chapter 19 of the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). He holds a PhD in Public Health and an MPH in Epidemiology and Disease Control.

Prof. Adelaide Lusambili

Prof. Adelaide Lusambili

Prof. Adelaide Lusambili is a Pan-African climate and health scientist whose work spans impact, intervention, and policy translation, addressing how a warming planet affects human health from the womb to old age. She is the Lead of the Environmental Health and Governance (EHAG) Centre at Africa International University, and Founder of NextGen for Earth. Her research is among the first to examine climate-health impacts across the full life course. She is Principal Investigator on three major studies: HEARTH (maternal and newborn heat exposure), ACACIA (climate and adolescent wellbeing), and SENIORS (heat and flooding impacts on ageing populations). She has authored over 80 peer-reviewed papers, shaped global climate policy from COP26 through COP29, and her work has been featured in Science, The New York Times, National Geographic, and the BBC.

Prof. Britt Nakstad

Prof. Britt Nakstad is a medical doctor trained in paediatrics and neonatology, and Professor of Neonatology and Paediatrics at the University of Botswana. Previously a professor at the University of Oslo for 18 years, she has been an engaged partner in three climate and health international projects since 2019, specifically related to women and children. She has produced more than 200 peer-reviewed papers related to climate change and health, newborn diseases, growth and development. She co-established the Journal of African Neonatology and edited Frontiers Neonatology Research Topics on neonatal health in low- and middle-income countries.

Dr. Oliver Moses

Dr. Oliver Moses

Dr. Oliver Moses is a climate scientist specialising in climate variability, climate change, and extreme weather events in southern Africa. He is a Senior Research Fellow in Climate Change Science at the Okavango Research Institute and Coordinator of the Climate Change Program. With over two decades of experience in weather and climate research, he has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of his scientific contributions, the International Astronomical Union named asteroid 28623 "Olivermoses" after him in 2023. He holds a PhD in Ocean and Atmospheric Science.

Olga Laiza Kupika

Olga Laiza Kupika

Olga Laiza Kupika is a Senior Research Fellow in Climate Change Adaptation at the Okavango Research Institute, University of Botswana. With over a decade of research experience, she leads and collaborates with multidisciplinary research teams on climate change projects. She is an African Group of Negotiators (AGNES) alumnus and a CIRCLE and CR4D Postdoctoral fellow alumnus. Her research interests include climate change impacts and adaptation across agriculture, health, education, biodiversity conservation, heritage, water and the tourism sector, aiming to strengthen climate-resilient approaches between scientists, policymakers and institutions.

Dr. Vincent Pagiwa

Dr. Vincent Pagiwa

Dr. Pagiwa is a public health specialist with more than 17 years of experience in research and practice, specialising in health policy and systems research, the climate change-health policy nexus, and health governance. He is currently a Public Health Research Fellow at the University of Botswana. He led the founding secretariat of the CHANCE Network, contributing significantly to advancing climate change and health policy development in Africa. He has participated in high-level dialogues including COP27 and COP28, the African Climate Summit, and AHAIC conferences. He holds a DrPH from La Trobe University and is an alumnus of the Afya Bora Fellowship in Global Health Leadership and the Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LeaF).

Dr. Samuel Muhula is a seasoned epidemiologist with 15 years of experience in the non-profit sector in sub-Saharan Africa. He serves as Senior Manager for Learning and Impact at Amref Health Africa Headquarters, supporting country teams across eight African countries. He is a Co-Investigator of the ESA Hub project and has led research in sexual and reproductive health, infectious diseases, and WASH, publishing extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He holds a PhD in Epidemiology from JKUAT and an MSc in Biostatistics from the University of Nairobi.

Tracy Lane is an Associate Director at KPMG East Africa and pillar lead for Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Sustainability within the International Development Advisory Services team. With over 20 years of experience advising governments, donors, civil society, and the private sector, she specialises in climate change resilience and adaptation, climate finance, and integration of sustainability into corporate and sectoral strategies. She serves as Co-Principal Investigator representing KPMG in the ESA Hub, a multi-country initiative advancing gender-responsive research, policy engagement, and community action on the climate-health nexus.

Dr. Walter P. Mukhwana is a seasoned Public Health Professional and Healthcare Consultant with over 23 years of experience in research, health systems strengthening, programme management, and technical advisory across Eastern and Southern Africa. He currently serves as a Healthcare Consultant/Advisor at KPMG East Africa, supporting Global Fund and Gavi health programmes. His technical expertise spans TB, HIV, malaria, maternal and child health, immunisation, health systems strengthening, and operational research. He serves as Co-Principal Investigator representing KPMG in the ESA Hub and is recognised for his strategic leadership, research excellence, and commitment to health equity.
